Udupi, 11 Oct 2017: The athletics meet of Physically Challenged Students as part of the three days long Udupi District Level Primary, Secondary and Physically Challenged Students Athletics Meet was held in St. Lawrence PU College ground Moodubelle on Wednesday, 11 October 2017 from 10.30 am to 3 pm.
The athletics meet of physically challenged students was inaugurated in a brief function held in the morning at 10.30 am with prayer song. The inaugural function was presided over by Mrs. Ranjani Hegde, President of Belle Grama Panchayat who unfurled the District Education Department Flag. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Correspondent of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions formally inaugurated the athletics meet by lighting the lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais including Madhukar S-Udupi District Physical Education Officer, Vincent Fernandes-Vice President of Church Council, Gerald Fernandes-President of PTA, Maxim D’Sa-President of Old Students Association, Mukunda Kamat-Donor, Ronald D’Souza-Manager of Belle Charitable Trust, members of the Belle Grama Panchayat, Heads of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions and officers from education department.
Madhukar S in his address explained the background of holding the athletics meet of physically challenged students from various schools in Udupi Distirct. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas and Mrs. Ranjani Hegde appreciated the presence of the physically challenged students and said that they are special children especially loved by God.
Mrs. Veera Fernandes, Headmistress of St. Lawrence English Medium High School welcomed the guests, Mrs. Leena D’Silva, Headmistress of St. Lawrnce Kannada Medium High School proposed the vote of thanks and Gopal Shetty, Physical Education teacher from Government PU College, Malpe compered the programme.
Fifty seven physically challenged students from five educational zones- Baindoor, Kundapura, Brahmavara, Udupi and Karkala attended the athletics meet. According to their special ability, these students were divided into different groups and they were assigned the prescribed competitions. The competitions included 50 meters race for under 14 and primary school students and 100 meters race for 17 years old students, javelin throw, shot put and long jump. Each student according to his or her special ability could take part in two events.
Soon after the end of the athletics meet medals and certificates were distributed to the winners in each event by dignitaries on the dais and in the audience.
Besides the medals and certificates each and every participant in the athletics meet was given cash prizes of Rs. 200/- each sponsored by Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Mukunda Kamat, Vincent Fernandes, Gerald Fernandes, Elias D’Souza and Marcel Lobo.
The three days long Udupi District Level Primary, Secondary and Physically Challenged Students Athletics Meet was conducted in an atmosphere of cooperation and discipline. All arrangements befitting the District level athletics competition were done by various committees comprising of the heads and staff of the four institutions of St. Lawrence educational Institutions as well as Moodubelle parishioners and villagers. The athletes and their accompanying teachers or parents and even the villagers who were present to witness the athletics meet were provided with breakfast as well as lunch. Although it rained in the neighbouring villages, Moodubelle was completely spared by the rains for two full days during which the primary and secondary school athletics meet was conducted. Though it rained during the night of 10-11 October, there was bright sunshine during the day of 11 October which enabled the authorities to conduct the athletics meet of physically challenged students smoothly. All the Physical Training Teachers cooperated excellently in conducting all the events during the three days without any complaint.
