Mangalore, 20 March 2011: The arrangement at the vegetable garden took Manasa to the days she spent in her home garden in Malpe. “Although I do not have the same area now, I would like to create a garden in the available space at the rented house in Bejai,” she said.
Ms. Manasa was one of the many who were impressed with the arrangement at the vegetable garden, which is a part of the Vegetables and Flowers show at Kadri Park. The show ends on Sunday. One thing that stands out at the vegetable garden is the arrangement that not only adds beauty to the landscape but also provides a natural environment for the plants.
For instance, there are three different types of arrangements to grow the popular green vegetable “Basale Soppu”, which is a creeper. A long stick is stuck in the ground and four iron rods fixed in a cross form on the top. Bamboo is tied in circular or square shapes. “I have tied the creeper along the wood and allowed it to spread on bamboo,” said Putta Nayak, Horticultural Department employee.
Shyam Prasad, a resident of Ullal, was impressed with this arrangement. “This creates a canopy. It helps watering and growth of the creeper in a better way,” he said.
It has taken two months for Mr. Nayak and his colleagues to prepare his garden. “I have been doing this for a long time. You have to have passion and a drive in gardening,” he said.
Sushant and his classmates from Karnataka Polytechnic were among those who were coming to the show for the first time. “We liked the flower model of the World Cup trophy,” said Sushant and added: “Of course, I have been keenly watching the matches.”
For people like Dinesh Attavar, an avid gardener, the show provided a chance to look at new combination of flowers. He spent around an hour at the show and went away with saplings estimated at Rs. 700. “You have to take care of them like your children to give a fruitful yield,” he said. People started to come to the show since Saturday morning. The show was formally inaugurated at 4.30 p.m.
