Shirva, 30 Nov 2015: In thrilling finals between ICYM Moodubelle and ICYM Pangla cricket match, ICYM Pangla cricket team comfortably managed to beat Moodubelle team and win the prestigious Robin, Henry & Joyson Memorial Cup 2015 which was held on 29th November at St. Mary’s College ground. In total 12 teams from Udupi Diocese participated in this memorable tournament namely St. Theresa Kera, Karkala, Sacred Heart of Jesus Kolalgiri, Lady of Health Church Shirva, St. Joseph’s Church Belman, Holy Cross Church Pamboor, St. John Evangelist, Pangla, St. Lawrence Moodubelle, Mother of Sorrows Udupi, Holy Family Church Brahmawar, St. Peter Neri Church Basroor, Our Lady of Fathima – Pernal and St. Francis Xavier Udyavar.
The inaugural function in the morning was attended by Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro – Parish Priest Shirva, Mr. Ivan D’Souza, MLC, Mr. Johnson D’Souza – S.I. Shirva, Mr. Sunil Cabral, Mr. Wilson D’Souza (Vice President- Parish Council Shirva) and Mr. Melwin D’Souza – President-Rotary Shirva.
On the occasion MLC Ivan D’Souza was honoured and in response he thanked for the great honour and said that he has played numerous matches in the same ground and happy to attend this Robin, Henry and Joyson Memorial Tournament. He also advised to name a road in memory of these three young men who have lost their lives at the very young age and promised fund for the road.
Mr. Johnson D’Souza also spoke and encouraged youth to enter into government jobs by studying IAS and other government related courses. Speaking on the occasion Fr. Stany Tauro told the youth to look for these great personalities and make them their models. Work hard, study well and achieve their golas in life and be successful as these personalities have achieved.
The tournament was inaugurated by MLC Ivan batting and Mr. Johnson D’Souza did the bowling.
All the twelve teams played the matches (4 overs each innings) due to time constraint in a very sportsmen spirit. In the leagues matches, the four team managed to reach the semi-finals ie..e Kolalgiri, Pamboor, Pangla (Shankerpura) and Moodubelle.
In the Semi-finals, Moodubelle beat Kolalgiri and Shankerpura beat Pamboor and reached the finals. In the finals Moodubelle succumbed to powerful bowling by Pangla team and just managed to score 21 runs which Pangla chased within 3 overs and bagged the winner’s trophy. The wonderful commentary was provided by Mr. Sayed during all the matches.
The concluding and prize distribution ceremony was held after the matched over and was attended by Mr. Wilson D’Souza – Vice President – Parish Council Shirva, Rev. Fr. Sunil Castelino – Asst. Parish Priest, Shirva, Mr. Sunil Cabral (Businessman), tournament officials and referees.
Clinton Pereira, President ICYM Shirva welcomed the gathering and accorded a hearty welcome to all the guests on the dais. Wilson D’Souza, the chief guest encouraged youth to take more interest in sports and thanked all the teams participated. He said Moodubelle and Pangla players know the Shirva ground very well as most of them study at St. Mary’s College in Shirva and hence they could beat other teams who are not very familiar with the Shirva ground and reached the semi-finals.
Fr. Stany Tauro handed over the trophies to the winners and Merrick Cutinho compeered the Prize Distribution Ceremony. Vote of thanks was proposed by Avil Saldhana – Gen. Secretary ICYM Shirva.
