Udupi, 15 Oct 2015: The district chief justice and munsif court here on Thursday October 15, convicted 3 persons to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1.10 lac each for abducting and gang-raping a MBBS student hailing from Kerala at Ontibettu near Manipal here on June 21, 2013. The three convicted persons are Yogish Poojary, Hariprasad Poojary and Ananda.
The court also awarded 3 years of rigorous punishment and also a fine of Rs 5,000 each to two persons identified as Balachandra and Harindra for destructing of evidence. The judgment was announced by the chief justice and munsif court judge Shivashankar B Amarannavar here on Thursday afternoon.
It may be recalled that a medical student of Manipal University hailing from Kerala was abducted and gangraped near Manipal on June 20, 2013. After a massive manhunt, the police nabbed Yogish Poojary, Hariprasad Poojary and Anand on June 27, 2013. They were charged under Sections 366, 376D, 506 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
The police had also arrested 2 more persons Balachandra, brother of Yogesh, and Harindra, brother of Hariprasad, on charges of trying to destroy evidence on July 2, 2013.
