Udupi, 07 Sep 2015: St. Lawrence Educational Institutions jointly celebrated Teachers Day on Monday, 7 September 2015 at 11.30 am in St. Lawrence Parish Hall. Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas-Correspondent of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions presided over the function. Rev. Fr. Valerian Mendonca, an eminent educationist, former principal of Milagres College, Kallianpur and presently Chancellor of Udupi Diocese and Parish Priest of St. Peters Church, Barkur was the chief guest. Other dignitaries on the dais included Rev. Fr. Victor Fernandes (OFM Cap)-Assistant Parish Priest, Commodore Jerome Castelino (VSM)-Dean of St. Lawrence Degree College, Mrs. Chandrakala BE-In-charge Principal of St. Lawrence PU College, Mrs. Leena D’Silva-Headmistress of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School, Mrs. Veera Fernandes-Headmistress of St. Lawrence English Medium High School, Richard Andrade-Headmaster of Belle Church Aided Higher Primary School, J.B. Miranda-member of the Managing Committee, Alphonse Alva-Vice President of Parish Pastoral Council and also President of PTA, St. Lawrence PU College and Mrs. Gladys Rebello-President of PTA of St. Lawrence English Medium High School.
The programme began by singing prayer song by the students of Church Aided Higher Primary School. Miss Ashwini Fernandes of Third Year B.Com welcomed the guests and the gathering. Thereafter, two students-Karthik Shetty from St. Lawrence English medium High School and Sharath, Second Year PUC Commerce student spoke about the importance of the Teachers Day. Students of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School presented a group song.
Teachers of different educational institutions were felicitated by Rev. Fr. Valerian Mendonca followed by Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas. Mrs. Gladys Rebello read the names of the teachers.
Mrs. Chandrakala BE spoke on behalf of the teachers and narrated her own experience as a student and as a teacher.
Mrs. Veera Fernandes introduced the chief guest of the function-Rev. Fr. Valerian Mendonca highlighting his achievements in the field of education, music and administration.
In his Teachers Day Message, Re. Fr. Valerian Mendonca said that there was festive atmosphere in the auditorium as the students cheered their teachers as they were honoured by presenting them token gifts. Narrating the famous quote from former president of India, Late APJ Abdul Kalam about his appeal to the students to dream big, Fr. Valerian said that every teacher has dreams about his or her students that they become successful in their lives and achieve greater heights as human beings, professionals and citizens. Even the parents have dreams for their own children. When the students fulfil the dreams of their teachers and parents which would be the greatest gift to them.
Rev. Fr. Valerian Mendonca distributed prizes to teachers who had won in the spot games organized in the morning by the PTA members and students.
Students from PUC presented a record dance and students from St. Lawrence English medium High School presented a folk dance.
Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas complimented the PTA office bearers and members for organizing such an excellent programme to honour the teachers on Teachers Day celebration. He also appreciated the good work that is being done by the teachers in all the five institutions in St. Lawrence Group of Educational Institutions.
Fr. Clement also honoured Rev. Fr. Valerian Mendonca and J.B. Miranda who had served as teachers and administrators before their retirement.
Alphonse Alva proposed the vote of thanks. The entire programme was compered by Reema Mathias and Royson D’Souza, both students of St. Lawrence English medium High School.
