Mangaluru, 11 Mar 2015: Gerosa Dheena Seva Trust and Sisters of Charity organised free health camp at Basavalingappa Nagara Colony, Pacchanady here to mark International Women’s Day on Sunday March 8. It is a place of slum dwellers working in the dump yard picking the plastic items and selling for their livelihood. They are dwelling there from 30 to 40 years without basic amenities.
The theme of this year for the International Women’s day was ‘Make it Happen’ the nuns have really made it happen with other collaborators of the programme like Fr Muller Hospital doctors, MSW students of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) and Mangalore University College.
On this special occasion, Dr Jecinta Martis addressed the gathering on the importance of health. She said that Health is Wealth and therefore, if one is healthy then one can do anything and even achieve one’s goal in life.
Fr Eric Mathias SJ spoke highlighting the important role of women in today’s society. He said that women are the ones who build the families by sacrificing their self for others in the family. He thanked the selfless dedicated service of Dr Kuldeep Moras, Dr Jacinta Martis, Dr Elroy Saldanha, Dr Mario Buthello, Dr Rithesh D’Cunha and Sisters of Charity.
The prizes were distributed to all the winners of the sports meet held on March 5.
Dr Sr Lenita interacted with the adolescent girls and addressed the health issues of the adolescence.
Prameela, the community organizer of municipal council urged the slum dwellers community to avail government facilities related to health schemes and other state benefits.
For the Health Check-up there were 6 doctors and 10 Sisters of Charity from Fr Muller Hospital. About 140 people turned up for the health check-up. Free health cards were made for each family. The people and children who were sick were given free medicine. And those who needed special treatment were called to the hospital for free treatment.
