Udupi/M’Belle, 21 Dec 2014: The NSS Unit of St. Lawrence PU College, Moodubelle celebrated a decade of its service to the society on Sunday, 21 December 2014 at 3.30 pm. The Decennial Celebration function was inaugurated by Rajendra Prasad IPS, Superintendent of Police of Udupi District. Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira, Principal of St. Lawrence PU College presided over the function. The other dignitaries on the dais included Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Souza-member of Udupi Zilla Panchayat, Rajendra Shetty-President of Belle Grama Panchayat, Devdas Hebbar-member of Udupi Taluk Panchayat and President of Old Students Association, Muddu Moodubelle-old student and retired Akashwani presenter, R.B. Nayak-In-charge Deputy Director of PU Education, A.K. Alva-Vice President of Parish Pastoral Council, Joseph Martis-President of Parents-Teachers Association, Navin Correa-NSS Programme Officer, Larsen Edward D’Souza-former NSS Programme Officer and S.P. Sagar-NSS student leader.
After Rajendra Prasad IPS formally inaugurated the Decennial Celebration function by lighting the lamp, he followed by other dignitaries on the dais affixed their signature on the poster indicating the decennial of the NSS Unit.
Rajendra Prasad in his address said that by himself being a NSS volunteers while he was studying in degree college, he could understand the responsibilities as the Superintendent of Police. NSS enables a person to develop a sense of service. Speaking about education, Rajendra Prasad quoting Swami Vivekananda said, “Essence of education is concentration of mind and not collection of facts.” He also said that parents and teachers play an important role in the education of the children and youth and appealed the parents not to push their children to score high marks and cause stress among them, but rather along with studies encourage them to participate in spors and develop other talents which would help them in evolving as complete human beings and responsible citizens.
Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira honoured Dr. Rajendra Prasad by offering him shawl, fruit tray and memento.
Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Souza distributed certificates and mementos to NSS volunteers who had participated in special camps held in different parts of the state.
Zilla Rajyotsava awardee-Boggu Parava, mother of Sandeep Shetty Manibettu, comedy actor of ‘Bale Telipaale’ and Mr. Bernard D’Souza and his wife Mrs. Regina D’Souza were honoured on this occasion.
Heads of four schools-Alevoor, Edmeru, Padubelle and Kajarabettu out of ten schools where the annual camps were held by the NSS Unit of St. Lawrence PU College were also honoured on this occasion.
The Decennial Souvenir was released by Rajendra Shetty.
Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Souza, Rajendra Shetty, R. B. Nayak and Muddu Moodubelle in their messages congratulated St. Lawrence PU College NSS Unit for having completed ten years of social service.
A.K. Alva distributed prizes to the winners of the games organized in the morning.
Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira, Edward Larsen D’Souza and Navin Correa were also felicitated during the function.
In his address, Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira expressed happiness over the decennial celebration of NSS Unit.
Edward Larsen D’Souza welcomed the guests, Navin Correa proposed the vote of thanks and John Castelino compeered the programme.
Following the end of stage programme various entertainment items such as singing, group dances, skits, etc. were presented by the past and present NSS volunteers.
Earlier in the morning, at 9.30 am, the decennial celebration was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira by hoisting the national flag and Mukunda Kamath hoisting the NSS flag. Thereafter, the NSS volunteers, past and present, carried on cleanliness drive on the main road of Moodubelle.
Banners containing collage of pictures of various annual camps held in ten different schools and the state level girls special camp were displayed which rekindled the memories of the past NSS volunteers about the camps in whcih they had participated.
Various indoor games were organized for the NSS volunteers in the PU College hall. Following the lunch break, a meeting of the NSS volunteers was conducted during which the past students narrated their experience and expressed a desire to hold such get-togethers in the coming years also along with Old Students Association’s programmes. Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira, Mrs. Chandrakala, Devdas Hebbar, Edward Larsen D’Souza and Navin Correa were present for the meeting.
