Mangalore, 25 November 2010: Vanessa D’Souza of Mangalore has done the city proud by winning the First CAI (Chess Association India) National Women’s Chess Championship held in Palakkad, Kerala, from November 18 to 21. It was organised by the Palakkad District Chess Association on behalf of the Kerala Chess Association under the aegis of CAI.
Vanessa D’Souza, a Derik’s Chess School talent, studying in X standard in St. Agnes Girls High School. The latest victory came after her good show in the National School Games Chess Championship held in Goa from November 10 to 14. In that event, Vanessa D’Souza had scored all the wins to help the Karnataka Under-17 girls’ team to clinch the silver medal.
She had won the individual board prize. A Derik’s School pressnote said Vanessa scored unbeaten seven points in the Palakkad meet in as many rounds to win the gold medal and cash prize of Rs. 20,000. She had been selected to represent the CAI in an international event in 2011, the statement said. Others who did well in the event were Mahima Khandige and Sanchitha Kamath of St. Agnes Girls High School (runners-up and second runners-up respectively in the under-14 category), Sanskrithi Rao of BGS Education Centre (runners up in the under-12 category), Reesha Shenoy of Carmel English Medium (runners-up in the under-10 category), Adithi B. Rao and Ashwija Bharanya of Sharada Vidyalaya (secured IV and V position respectively in the under-10 category).
