Mangalore: Road to named as ‘Flight Lieutenant Ronald Kevin Serrao Road’

Mangalore, 16 January 2010: The Kuchikad Road of Kulshekhar in the city will be renamed as ‘Flight Lieutenant Ronald Kevin Serrao Road’ as a gesture of gratitude to the valiant soldier, who sacrificed his life for the Motherland in 2007. 

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Colonel N Sharath Bhandary said that the renaming function will be organised by the Dakshina Kannada District Retired Soldiers Association in Association (DRSA) with Mangalore City Corporation at Kuchikad Road on January 17.

While Mangalore South MLA N Yogish Bhat will inaugurate the function, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MCC Mayor M Shanker Bhat, Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash, Mangalore Diocese Bishop Fr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj, Superintendent of Police Dr A S Rao, Corporator Mariamma Thomas and DRSA president Dr Radhakrishna Shetty will be the guests, he added.

Flight Lieutenant Ronald Kevin Serrao, who was the son of Retired Lieutenant Colonel John Noel Serrao and Dr Jessica Serrao couple of Kuchikad, had died while practicing the bombing sorties at Pokhran Field Firing Ranges in Rajastan on January 18, 2007, Bhandary said.

A memorandum was placed before the district administration and MCC to rename the Kuchikad Road as Flight Lieutenant Ronald Kevin Serrao Road by the citizens as a gratitude to brave soldier on February 10, 2007. The proposal has been passed by the MCC and later it was approved by the government on December 10, 2008, he explained. The renaming programme will be organised on January 17, since it is the birthday of Flight Lieutenant Ronald Kevin Serrao, he added. Retired Lieutenant Colonel John Noel Serrao and Dr Radhakrishna Shetty were present.
