Udupi/M’belle, 21 Sep 2014: As in previous years, this year also Free Eye Camp was organized in Lions Seva Bhavan, Moodubelle on Sunday, 21 September 2014 from 9.30 am to 1 pm. The camp was jointly organized by Lions Club, Moodubelle, Prasad Nethralaya, Udupi, District Health and Family Welfare Society, NSS Unit of St. Lawrence Degree College, Late K. Laksmi Narayan and Nidambur Vyasaraya Ballal, Mumbai, Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Village Development Programme, Belle-Kattingeri, Nisarga Yuvaka Mandala Edmeru and JCI, Belle.
The Free Eye Camp was inaugurated by the chief guest, Arvind Ballal, son of famous Kannada writer Vyasaraya Ballal who had specially come from Mumbai to attend the function by lighting the lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais-Ln. Elias Lobo, President of the Lions Club, Moodubelle, Ln. Devdas Hebbar-Secretary, Ln. Rajendra Shetty-Treasurer of Lions Club and President of Belle Grama Panchayat, Dr. Daniel, Dr. Nityananda Nayak, Commodore Jerome Castelino-Founder President of Lions Club, Moodubelle,Mrs. Sujata Suvarna-President of SKDGY, Nagesh Dhondya-NSS Programme Officer of St. Lawrence Degree College, Ganesh Nayak-President of Nisarga Yuvaka Mandala and Santosh Kumar-President of JCI Belle.
In his message, Arvind Ballal said that society has given him quite a lot and he feels that it is his duty to give something back to the society. Hence, he has been sponsoring eye camps in different places especially in Mumbai. He assured his support and sponsorship in the coming years also for the Free Eye Camp that will be organized in Lions Seva Bhavan.
Dr. Nityananda Nayak in his address stressed on the importance of the sight and the need to take care of the health of the eye. He pointed out various ailments that affect the eye especially diabetes and the need to keep it under control so that the eye sight can be preserved. He also mentioned about the ailment of the eye known as glaucoma and how it can be treated.
As a token of appreciation, Ln. Elias Lobo presented a memento and a certificate of appreciation to Arvind Ballal for his noble act of sponsoring the Free Eye Camp.
Besides the general eye check up, people were also checked for their sight. Thirty patients who need cataract operation will be taken to Prasad Nethralaya on 26 September 2014 and operated free of charge. Those who need spectacles will be provided at cheaper rate.
Around 150 villagers took advantage of the Free Eye Camp.
Besides the NSS volunteers from St. Lawrence Degree College, some MSW students from St. Mary’s College, Shirva also participated in the Eye Camp.
Ln. Elias Lobo, President of Lions Club, Moodubelle welcomed the guests and participants in the Free Eye Camp and Ln. Devdas Hebbar compeered the inaugural function and proposed the vote of thanks.
