Udupi, 29 Aug 2014: Ganesha Chaturti is being celebrated amongst the people of different faith, caste and creed as national festival across India. The freedom fighter Bala Gangadhar Tilak ignited the nationalist sentiment and patriotism among the countrymen during pre-Independence era. Ganeshotsav is the symbol of national unity in diversity, said MLC Ivan D’Souza.
MLC Ivan was speaking after distribution prizes to the winners of cultural competitions during the function held here on Thursday August 28. The programme was led by Pilaru Kunjigudde Prince Point David D’Souza organized by public celebration of Ganeshotsav Committee.
Belman’s senior teacher and journalist B Pundalika Marate in his religious talk explained the significance of matriarchal family upbringing and religious celebrations in Indian culture.
Vedamurti Srisha Bhat graced the occasion.
Mudarangady gram panchayat president Vasanti Devadiga, Ganeshotsav Committee president Pradeep Kumar was the chief guests of the occasion.
Prince Point David D’Souza felicitated Ivan D’Souza, who rose from gram panchayat member from Kunjigudde ward during 1986 to become MLC.
Shirva entrepreneur Dinesh Suvarna, advocate Melvyn D’Souza and Sunil Cabral were present on the occasion.
Bhargavi cricket team of Koppalangady was awarded Prince Trophy – 2014 and cash prize of Rs 5,555, while Chandranagar Friends was awarded cash prize of Rs 3,333.
The teacher Alwyn Danti compered the programme.
The children presented cultural shows as part of entertainment programme.
E Ponnu Yer, Tulu movie was staged by the artistes of theater group – Vijaya Kalavidar led by Sharat Shetty Kinnigoli.
