Puttur, 16 Aug 2014: The postgraduate courses in economics and computer science was launched at St Philomena College, here on Saturday August 16.
The alumnus union railway minister D V Sadanand Gowda launched the new postgraduate courses during a function held at silver jubilee memorial hall here on Saturday morning.
The College is already offering PG courses in commerce, social work, physics and mathematics.
The College campus director and postgraduate studies chairman Fr Antony Prakash Monteiro in his introductory address said, ‘The results of the postgraduate PG courses which we had already started gave good results which encouraged us to start few more PG courses. The very purpose of an institution is to mould the students and prepare them for greater challenges. To witness this we have a number of students who have passed out and are doing great in their respective fields, one among them is union railway minister D V Sadananda Gowda,’ said Fr Monteiro.
Speaking on the occasion, Mangalore University – department of economics chairperson Professor Sripathi Kalluraya said, ‘Computer Science is the need of the hour for the younger generations and economics is forever.” He congratulated the management for taking the initiative of starting these courses. According to the development theory the availability of resources and utilizing the available resources is important for the development,’ said Professor Kalluraya. He advised the students that based on their learning one should be innovative in their approach and look out for a new type of development.

The union minister D V Sadanand Gowda in his acknowledgement address said that the foundation of his journey could be traced back to this college and owes so much to this institution which he will cherish throughout his life, said minister Sadanand.
He further said, ‘It is the college which has the responsibility of shaping the students in the right direction and make them capable enough to reach the level of excellence.’ He listed out 4 components which makes education effective, it being ‘learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, learning to be.’ Imbibing these four components in education will make it more powerful and influential.
He motivated the students by saying that instead of going in search of jobs you as students of this great institution should make a difference by creating jobs for many. He concluded by advising the students to work with sincerity and honesty.
The minister Sadanand released the annual bulletin on the same occasion.
Bishop Dr Aloysius P D’Souza in his presidential address said, ‘St Philomena College has been imparting education with character building blessed our honorable minister to perform to the best of its ability so as to serve the country.’
Mangalore diocesan Catholic Board of Education secretary Fr Gerald D’Souza, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and St Philomena PU College principal Fr Vijay Lobo were also present.
St Philomena education institutions correspondent Fr Alfred J Pinto welcomed the gathering. The College principal Professor Leo Noronha proposed vote of thanks. Professor Anil compered the programme.
