Udupi: Monsoon hunger, leopard falls into open well; rescued

Udupi, 05 Jul 2014: A leopard that strayed into inhabited land in search of food fell into an open well near Karavalu – Marne, here on Saturday July 5.
The sources informed that a certain Jayanthi Nayak, wife of Sadananda Nayak, who has gone to fetch water from their household well, heard snarls of a wild cat. When she peeped into the well, she saw a leopard swimming in the water and took refuge in a narrow ridge.
As the news spread, the locals rushed to the spot, but were restrained by the police as the well had no protective wall around.
The forest officer Prakash Poojary arrived on the spot along with foresters and Manipal police who tried all means to rescue the trapped leopard for nearly an hour.
Finally, the rescue team lowered 2 huge wooden logs into the well, and the leopard, after 2 failed attempts, crawled out in the third attempt reached the top, and leaped out and disappeared into the woods.
The city fire brigade also assisted in rescue operation.
