M’lore : Cancer Screening Week for Women at Father Mullers

M’lore, 18 Feb 2014 : It is said ‘Prevention is better than cure’ It is universally known that cancer is a deadly disease. Crores of rupees are being spent to irradiate cancer with decimal result. The need of the hour is to prevent the disease. In this context the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Father Muller Medical College Hospital is organizing Cancer Screening Week for Women from 17th to 22nd February in room no- 19 at Father Muller Medical College Hospital from 8:30 am to 4:30pm.
The facilities offered for the patients are consultation by experienced staff, tests like Pap smear will be conducted to detect cervical cancer, Mammography/sonomamography to detect breast cancer and Ultrasound of Pelvis to detect the cancer of uterus. Hospital is offering 50% concession on each test for the public and 100% concession for the hospital staff.
The inauguration of the same took place on 17th February, 2014 at Father Muller Medical College Hospital.
Rev. Fr Patrick Rodrigues, Director, FMCI, Dr. UdayKumar, Medical Superintendent, FMMCH, Sr. Aileen, Nursing Superintendent Officer and Dr. Sowmya, Coordinator of the event were the dignitaries.
Rev. Fr Patrick Rodrigues said, “Cancer is a tough disease especially when it has spread, therefore it is better to prevent it . We can cut down the risk of cancer by changing our lifestyle that includes habits such as smoking consumption of alcohol. More than 28% of the people get cancer due to tobacco. If people become cautious and improve their habits, cancer can be prevented to some extent.” He added, “Women should not have inhibition to consult the doctors with regard to their health care.”
In order to make it more meaningful and interesting, during this week the department is organizing various competitions for the students. There will be displaying of videos and charts. The department has also arranged health education programmes by eminent doctors who would give health tips to the patients in the gynaecology ward of Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Father Muller Hospital, Thumbay and at Jeppu Urban Health Centre.
The entire exercise for the public will be to navigate the world of health care and to deal with the doctors, nurses and hospital in order to educate them to prevent this disease. Eminent gynecologists assisted by a team of experts will interact with the patients and inform them about the prevention of the disease.
