M’lore: Catholic Action League of Bendore Parish organizes Cancer Awareness Programme

Mangalore, 10 Nov 2013: The Catholic Action League (CAL) of St Sebastian’s parish, Bendore, here in association with the Rotary Club of Mangalore – Sunrise and Ave Maria Palliative Care, organized a cancer awareness programme at the parish mini hall, here on Saturday November 9 evening.
The city-based A J Hospital and Research Centre Professor Dr Shivashankar Bhat was the main speaker and moderator, along with the panelists Father Muller Medical College Hospital Dr Rohan Gatti and Ave Maria Palliative Care trustee Dr Laveena Noronha.
Bendore assistant parish preist and CAL director Fr John B Moras delivered the inaugurated the programme along with dignitaries.
CAL president Sachin Menezes and the animator Walter Colaco were also present on the dais.
Cancer awareness was presented with the latest modern electronic devices with multi-colour visual aids and with a language that was understood by all.
Causes of Cancer: Viruses, sunlight, tobacco, diet, radiation, alcohol, occupational factors, environment etc.
Signals: A change in bowel or bladder habits, sores that don’t heal, unusual bleeding or discharge, obvious change in a wart or a mole, thickening of lump in the breast or elsewhere, indigestion or difficulty in swallowing, nagging cough or hoarseness etc.
Symptoms:abdominal pain, jaundice, nausea, vomiting, swollen bladder, itchy skin, weight loss etc.
Tests: X-rays, mammograms, blood tests, FNAC, ultra sound, MRI scans, Blood investigation, Bbopsy, CT Scan, PET scans, abdominal sean, endoscopy etc.
Treatment: surgery, radio therapy, chemotherapy.
Palliative Care:
Care given to the patient to improve the quality of life and living, treatment of symptoms, psychological related treatments, social and spiritual life, dignity in death, depression, anxiety, fear, group support, counseling, family meetings, mental health, making the patient happy while living and die happily.
