Udupi: Manipal Stunned by Gang Rape of Medical Student in Campus

Udupi, 22 Jun 2013: A medical student of Manipal University was gang raped on Thursday June 20 night.Twenty-two-year-old MBBS final year student hailing from Kerala studying in Kasturba Medical College (KMC)l, Manipal is the victim who was admitted in KMC Hospital, here.

The incident of gang rape on a paramedical student by bus driver and his friends in New Delhi during December 2012 is still fresh in the minds of people, while in this case, an auto rickshaw driver and his 2 friends were involved in gang raping the medical student of KMC, Manipal.

 

The victim was walking to her hostel located in Mandovi Plaza, behind Manipal University after completing study at the library at about 11.30pm on Thursday, when 3 miscreants arrived in an auto rickshaw kidnapped her and left her on the same spot at 12.00pm after gang raping.  She recovered from her shock and walked up to her hostel and informed the incidence to the watchman. 

 

He informed the officers of Manipal University and she was admitted in KMC Hospital.  She suffered broken knee because she tried to protest their animosity.  A surgery has been performed in this regard.  She was not able to reveal further information as she is in a deep shock.

 

The hostel where she was living is just 500 meters away from Manipal University.  The chancellor’s bungalow is located nearby and district headquarter is located about one kilometers away.  The campus is busy with people even till late night. CCTVs are working in 3 roundabouts in Manipal.  The policemen of Manipal station patrol the campus along with private security men around-the-clock.  Despite this, the incident has taken place.

Over 8,000 students from 50 countries are studying in Manipal University, while a few girl students commit suicide with different means every year.  However, it’s the first case of gang rape that has taken place in Manipal.  The local residents and the students of Manipal University are indeed shocked over the incidence.

SP Dr Boralingaiah has taken earnest interest in carrying out the investigation related to this case.  Western Range acting IGP Abhishek Goel arrived at Manipal.  DySP Dr Mane, Kundapur DySP Yashoda Ontagodi are assisting in the investigations. SP Dr Boralingaiah expressed hope of nabbing the accused at the earliest, because the significant clues were already gathered form the footage of CCTV.
