Udupi, 8 Jun 2013: The local people have come to the rescue of a Dalit family of Porala Domba Koraga, natives of Kadambu, near Shirva, here, who were depressed over not having a roof over their head especially to carry on living in monsoon season. Meanwhile, the locals collectively built a modest dwelling for this distressed couple.
The Dalit family of Porala Domba Koraga was living in a hut along with their children Gopa, Raju, Tukra, Vittal and Gubbi. They had repaired their hut with the help of generous neighbours during 1995. Shirva gram panchayat granted a pittance of money to repair whenever it was threatened of collapsing. It has reached a perilous condition during this monsoon season. Despite the family plead Shriva gram panchayat, their pleas were unheard by the panchayat administration who were busy with election duty. The family fearing their hut would collapse in monsoon, erected a shanty nearby made out of coconut-fronds, supported by bamboo. The family lacked toilet but managed with covering a large cloth fastened to 4 poles.
The locals led by TP former member Ignatius D’Souza constructed a modest house in the same spot, while the carpenters Vaman Acharya and Sitaram Acharya labored through the rain to work on the roof.
Whether the house ever get a toilet, electricity by village council:
The Dalit family is moved by the humanity expressed their gratitude with folded-hands. Meanwhile, they hope the village council provides them a toilet and electricity connection to their dwelling.
