Udupi, 10 Mar 2013: Two Sri Lankan athletes won both top places in Udupi International Half Marathon held at Manipal, here on Sunday March 10.
Sri Lankan athlete Arun Fernandes bagged the first place in men’s division of half marathon comprised 21 kilometers, while Sri Lankan Disha Malakanti bagged the second place in women’s division. Both of them were awarded with cash prizes.
The half marathon was sponsored by Syndicate Bank. It was begun from the Bank’s headquarter, Manipal, here at 6.00am on Sunday. Seven-kilometers race for college students, five-kilometers race for school students and three-kilometers race for senior citizens were held in 10 categories.
Udupi district athletic Association had earlier planned to hold the competitions during winter season, but had to postpone it owing to Association president and MLA Raghupati Bhat’s hectic schedule of civic polls that were held on Thursday March 7. It’s owing to exam time, not many students have partaken in competitions this year. Despite the organizers expected 2000 participants, not even half of that numbers participated.
