Mangalore, 11 June 2012: The MLC elections from the graduate and teachers’ constituencies that started at 8 am on Sunday, June 10, 2012, ended peacefully at 4 pm. When this reporter revisited the Government College where election booths were set up at 4 pm, he came across some voters inside the premises casting their votes. It seems that some of the voters took their own sweet time to venture to the polling booths to cast their votes or may be goaded by the party workers to cast their votes in favour of their candidates.

Following the end of polling, speaking to this reporter, the polling officials expressed satisfaction at the smooth conduct of the elections. They said that the thorough preparations for the elections by the Election Commission officials have enabled them in conducting the polls without any problem. They appreciated the overall turn out of the voters and said that being graduates and teachers they expected no trouble from the voters.

There were seven candidates contesting from southwest graduates’ constituency and four from teachers’ constituency.

There were 11,859 eligible voters (7,115 men and 4,744 women) and 20 polling stations in Dakshina Kannada under the southwest graduates’ constituency.

When this reporter spoke to the leaders and workers of three major parties-BJP, Congress and JD(S), they were emphatic about the prospects of their candidates winning from both graduate and teachers’ constituencies.

Counting will take place on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 and the actual results will be out by afternoon.
