Bhairon Singh Shekhawat-Former Vice President of India Passes Away

Jaipur, May 15 2010: Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, former Vice President of India (19th August 2002 – 21st July 2007) and one of the great leaders of the BJP, passed away on Saturday, 15th May 2010 at around 11.10 am at the Swai Man Singh Hospital at jaipur. He was admitted to the ICU of the hospital two days earlier on the night of 13th may 2010 after complaining of uneasiness and breathing problems. He was 87 years old.
Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was born on 23rd October 1923 at the Khachariawas village in Sikar district of Rajasthan. He had a colourful and active political career. He was the only member of the Rajasthan Assembly to have won in every assembly election since 1952 up to 1972 when he lost from Gandhi Nagar in Jaipur. From 1974 to 1977, he was the Member of the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. From 1977 to 2002 once again Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was elected as the Member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. From 22nd June 1977 to 16th February 1980 he was the Chief Minister of Rajashtan. From 1980 to 1990 he became the Leader of the Opposition, Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. He was the Chief Minister of Rajasthan for the second time from 4th March 1990 to 15th December 1992 and from 4th December 1993 to 29th November 1998 he had the distinction of becoming the Chief Minister of Rajasthan for the third time. Once again from December 1998 to August 2002, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat became the Leader of the Opposition, Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. He was the 11th Vice President of India and the Ex-Officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha from 19th August 2002 to 21st July 2007.
