Udupi: Fr. Alfred Roche, OFM Cap., was a Capuchin priest known for his saintly life, selfless service, and deep spirituality. His pastoral mission, especially in Karnataka, left an indelible mark on the faithful. As the Church now advances his cause for canonization, the final celebration of his birth centenary on April 3, 2025, at Holy Family Church, Brahmavar, will be a significant milestone in honouring his legacy.
Early Life and Calling:
Born on April 3, 1924, in Moodahadu Kudru, in historical Barkur, Udupi, into a devout Catholic family, Sacristan Late Isaac Roche and Carmine Montero as fifth child and this wonder child Francis Roche (his baptismal name) felt a strong calling to the religious life. He joined the Capuchin Order, took the name Alfred, and was ordained a priest on April 11, 1951. From the beginning, his deep faith, humility, and love for the poor set him apart.
Missionary Work and Pastoral Zeal:
Fr. Alfred Roche dedicated his priestly life to serving remote parishes. His longest and most impactful tenure was at Holy Family Church, Brahmavar, where he served for 16 years (1956–1972). Here, he transformed the parish into a vibrant centre of faith and charity. He also served in Farangipet, Binaga, Casarkod near Honnavar etc…

Spiritual Shepherd: His deep faith and ability to connect with people made him a beloved spiritual guide.
Eucharistic Devotion: He emphasized the importance of the Eucharist, often spending hours in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.
Service to the Poor: He was known for his generosity, personally helping the needy and visiting the sick.
Promotion of Education: He encouraged youth education and spiritual growth.
A Life of Humility and Holiness:
Fr. Alfred Roche was a true Franciscan, embodying simplicity, prayerfulness, and charity. His exemplary life drew many closer to God, and people began witnessing his intercessory power even after his death on December 31, 1996.
Path to Sainthood:
Recognizing his holiness, the Diocese of Udupi and the Capuchin Order initiated his Cause for Canonization, and he was declared a Servant of God. His centenary celebrations in 2024–25 have rekindled devotion to him, with many faithful seeking his intercession.

The Capuchins of the Holy Trinity Province, Karnataka, warmly invite you to the Closing Ceremony of the Birth Centenary of the Servant of God, Fr. Alfred Roche, OFM Cap. The solemn occasion will take place on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church, Brahmavar.
The Holy Eucharistic Celebration will be presided over by Very Rev. Fr. John Alwyn Dias, OFM Cap., the Provincial of the Holy Trinity Province, Karnataka. Following the Eucharistic celebration, a short prayer service and fellowship meal will be held, bringing together devotees, clergy, and well-wishers in remembrance of Fr.
