Udupi, 14 August 2011: Some of the CBSC, ICSC syllabus English Medium Schools of the district, forgetting that they are in India, were conducting the Independence day celebrations on 14th August (on Pakistan’s Independence day) and declare holiday for the school on 15th August, thus the teachers and students comfortably stay at home on actual independence day. This practice has been going on since many years. But this time the Deputy Commissioner has given instructions to stop this dishonouring practice.
This time the Deputy Commissioner Dr. M.T. Reju has issued strict instructions to celebrate the independence day compulsorily on 15th August, in all government, aided, non-aided, CBSC, ICSC, including English medium schools. It is not just the celebration of independence day for formality, but the schools need to be responsible to the society and certain projects are organized which will be implemented through the education department.
During the independence day celebration, in order to highlight the awareness among the students, parents and the community; the slogans, banners, leaflets, still pictures, skits, songs and such activities on the significance of complete cleanliness revolution are to be organized. Programs to be conducted to encourage the creation of clean environment, through individual cleanliness, building and usage of toilets and such cleanliness practice, instructed the D.C.
Nagendra Madhyasta – Deputy Director of District Public Education Department has said that as per the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner, all the heads of the schools have been informed about these instructions.

Very sound instructions to all citizen of Udupi District. Dr Reju has done well in giving clean and clear instructions. If any one does not obey these instructions must leave India. They have no right to deviate form celebrating the day of Independence. Udupi lacks discipline in several ways and times and on events. Discipline if enforced every one will be happy and comfortable. If the District Administration is truely functioning there must be discipline in the District and Udupi District will be a model one. Let us all co-operate with the District Administration, in the unity of the nation and live peacefully happily. May I wish you all viewers a Happy Independence Day? Long live Indian Independence. | |

It would be fitting tribute if the national holiday is withdrawn; but, instead of transacting routine business, the government offices remain open for more than usual hours, holding public interactions, panel discussions, cultural activities including food and fun fare, more on the lines of police day celebrations. Even the Red Fort show could be replaced. One of the suggestions to take July 4 celebrations in US. Another is to consider a single national day celebrations instead of Aug15, Jan26 and various state formation days like May1 in Maharashtra, Nov1 in Karnataka, etc. Working more and not less as adults will encourage students too to be at school on the day. Honestly as things stand, 90% of students stay at home, while the remaining attend out of compulsion. |
