Udupi, 13 Apr 2022: Milagres College Post Graduate, M. Com studies Dept have a great reason to celebrate with two Rank Holders…..in Renita and Swathi….
There was a time, in a radius of about 25 miles Milagres High School was the only such Institution till….1946, when Barkur had National Higher Secondary School and in 1952 SMS And probably in 1949 Viveka High School Kota…..otherwise one have to go to Udupi or Kundapur even to Mangalore for High School studies…..It was dream come true situation for the youth of the surrounding in 1967 a College was started by an visionary Msgr Denis Jerome DSouza with Arts and Commerce streams. Since the very inception of the College, headed by founder Principal Dr P. Gururaja Bhat was known for quality education and it registered an unparallel record by securing a number of ranks from the erstwhile University of Mysore till 1982. The lions-share of such recognition was attributed to Arts stream for sure, rather a fact no one deny, that too the most passionate studies of History, as in those years the College produced best historians, many of them made their presence felt with their research, insightful writings and as professors and principals of various reputed Colleges. Among others departments of languages, Economics were well-known during early years of the Colleges.
The undersigned had the privilege of studying in this temple of learning in 1979 – 82. It was during these years its Dept of Commerce was the heart of the College with 80 plus students in each class. There were students from Kota, Barkur, Brahmmavar, Perdur, Hebri, Udyavara, Katpady, Kemman, Thottam, even distant Shirva, Belmann, Shankerpura who were our classmates. (Both SMS Brahmmavar and St. Mary’s Shirva started together in the year 1980).
In those years, Prof KN Kedlaya was HOD with Prof Deenadasa Shetty, Prof Richard Rebello, Prof Wilfred DSouza, Advocate Shirtady William Pinto and young and smart Prof Peter DSouza – each and everyone possessed with unique teaching skills, knowledge and concern for their students at large. It needs pages together to share those nostalgic memories… and to cut the long story short, the goodwill and respectability earned by this Institution over the decades always kept intact, rather it was taken up to next level of recognition both by the Principals who walked into the shoes of Dr Bhat, in Rev Dr. Peter Th. DSouza, Rev. Dr. L. Mendonca, Rev Fr. JB DSouza, Rev Fr. Valerian Mendonca, Rev Fr. Fredrick Muscarenhus, Dr. Nery Carnelio, Dr Gerald Pinto and for the last 6 years by Dr. Vincent Alva with their respective contemporaries over the years.
Since me too is a product of this College, that too attached to the Department of Commerce, truly had that passionate attachment with my teachers of those days. Out of about a dozen of them half of those great souls now in heavenly abode. Whenever, any old student visit the alma-mater the Principals cabin decorated with life size portraits of all the Principals a tribute, but also to remind you the great legacy of their time, name and fame…..Yes , each and every graduate from here might have same lecturers but each and everyone’s experience, attachment and relationship with their teachers quite different. That, one will realise only after leaving the Milagres Campus for good and only shared during those batch-mates conclaves. For example, we passed out in 1982, about 40 years ago. We have an active group and meet regularly – at times 10, 15 or 20 at a time. Every occasion we have different stories to share and never felt bored to listen to them…..that is why it must be the youthful College days, were the best days in life….!!
When it comes to College days, I really miss the track, rather forget the purpose of scribbling few lines…… and now coming back to the focal point, the Dept of Commerce, which always remained as one of the largest in the College for years and even today it’s a record that we are 8 in total in the Degree section only….headed by scholarly Prof Shylet Mathias, the coveted Gold Medallist with first rank in M.Com and others too distinctively at par with any best teacher in Commerce…. Probably that reputation of teaching staff in a substantial way and the perennial demand from students to have avenues for further studies…… motivated the Management to introduce two divisions and today more than 400 – 450 students learning in Commerce and Accountancy Block of the College. That rightly encouraged to have Post Graduation Centre for M.Com studies in way back 2015 since then it has recorded a spectacular growth in imparting quality education.
Other day Mangalore University declared the list of Rank Holders and its two student’s names made headlines and during this time even when Semester exams are on, there was no limit for jubilations in the Camp.
It is truly a proud moment to Milagres College, Kallianpur - two of its illustrious M. COM students, Ms Renita secured II Rank and Ms Swathi Poojary III rank in their post graduation studies in Commerce in the Mangalore University.
We the entire Milagrean family of old students, take this opportunity to join the Correspondent, the Principal, the Staff and Students to congratulate the Rank Holders, for their wonderful academic performance and extend our very special thanks to their parents and family and professors, especially Prof Ganesh Nayak, who worked tirelessly to ensure this great outcome from his students, Dr. Ganesh Bhat, the Co-ordinator, of PG Section, Prof Hilda Rodrigues, guest faculty, our colleagues in the Commerce Dept viz Prof. Melson DSouza, Mrs Chaitra K. and others, who were always there to support and encourage them…..!
Let the Milagrean flag fly high with their Students with many more such achievements and performances in coming days to come…..
Let me take a little of your time to introduce briefly our proud rank holders on this glorious occasion.
Ms. Renita Coth, daughter of Philip Coth and Shobha DSouza, hailing from distant Soraba in Malnad Shimogga District, has done her B.Com studies from BB Hegde College, Kundapur with I class and distinction. For her excellent academic performance, the local Amara Jyothi Composite Junior College, in Soraba, wasting no time, appointed her as Lecturer in Commerce. Today she is a proud II Rank holder in M.Com…..!!
Ms Swathi Poojary recipient of M.Com III Rank is a proud daughter of Shanta & Kota Srinivasa Poojary, the Hon’able Minister in Karnataka State Govt, headed by Chief Minister SR Bommai. Most startling observation in Swathi is – she never exhibited or introduced herself as a Minister’s daughter. So humble and simple like her parents, always known for friendly nature. It was a fact for long, even her classmates were unaware of this fact, travelling by bus eating simple food in the canteen.…..She has done her BBM from Upendra Pai Memorial College, Manipal with prestigious II Rank, in the University. She has plans to go for further studies, probably Ph. D.
Both the jewels have few common things as they are down to earth and passionate towards their alma-mater Milagres. Both never claimed any credit for themselves rather fame, recognition followed them. Favourites of their respective teachers, the Principal and the batch-mates surely have a bright career to follow….
It is said success have many friends and failure is left alone, but we at Milagres always tried to extract best from their students, as ours is the role of facilitators than tutors. It’s their hard work paid rich dividends and the Patroness of the Institution in Mother Milagres blessed them in abundance.
