Udupi: Students of St. Mary’s English Medium School (CBSE) Kannarpady, experience field Day

Udupi, 01 Aug: As a part of their practical experience on Social Science Lesson “agricultural“, the Xth Standard students of St. Mary’s English Medium School (CBSE), Kannarpady, Udupi experienced Field day by planting the rice saplings at Biliyaroo, Durganagar on Wednesday 31  July 2019.

 

Ms. Linet Castelino (Teacher), introduced the rice field owner/Farmer Mahesh Suvarna on whose farm students later transplanted the rice saplings. The students were accompanied by Rev. Fr. Johnson Lawrence Sequeira (Principal), Teachers; Vinaya Suvarna, Linet J. Castelino and Jagadish Acharya.

 

After the intro the enthusiastic students jumped in the field and did the transplanting for an hour and the young minds were curious to know how the rice is grown and developing stages of rice plants, etc.

 

 

After the field experience there was a small question/answer section which was led by Sir. Vinaya Suvarna and the students asked valuable questions to the farmer Mahesh wherein he answered all their questions such as type of crops are grown, the period it requires the grow the plants and rice and water facility, etc.

 

Farmer Mahesh along with his wife explained in details the process of rice cultivation, variety of rice grown along with type of vegetables they grow such as Ladies Finger, Pumpkin, Brinjal, Bottle guard, Ash Pumpkin and sweet potatoes. Sudhir Shetty (neighbour) also explained the students on growing variety of vegetables.

 

After gaining enough experience on rice cultivation, the students were led to Mahesh’s house wherein he introduced students his Dairy Farm. He has around dozen of cows and calves. He showed them milking process (through machinery) and how to take care of cows and feeding processes.

 

The students and teachers as a kind gesture presented to Mahesh a gift in recognition of his services.

 

Final part of the lesson was Jasmine Cultivation. Shankerpura Jasmines are very famous all over the world. Jasmines are grown by every house-hold in Shankerpura since 1930s. Ms. Ragu Shetty and Sudhir Shetty explained the students the value of Jasmine Flowers, their value, and how they are grown, and sold in the market through which the people are benefitted financially.

 

After gaining loads of experience in Rice Cultivation, Dairy Milk processing and Jasmine Cultivation, the students left back to school joyfully thanking Farmer Mahesh and all people for helping them for the great opportunity they had in the field.
