Sharjah: Mangalore Konkans, Saifa Friends won Karaval Milan Trophy

Sharjah, 13 February 2010: As a part of its Decennial celebration Karaval Milan’, the unified voice of the 19 parishes on the coastline parishes within the jurisdiction of Mangalore Diocese, has organized men volley and ladies throwball tournament. Every weekend and every holiday are very useful for Mangaloreans living gulf countries and they make sure it is used and spent properly with their families and friends.

Karaval Milan had planned this day being the perfect day to hold an open tournament of Throwball and Volleyball inviting all teams of U.A.E at the Wonderers Club in Sharjah. Large crowds gathered to witness the best teams fight each other to clinch the top honour and they were nail biting finishes. Mangalore Konkans managed to win over Bunts Dubai in Ladies Throwball match in straight two sets while the Saipa took away Volley ball Karaval Milan championship from Ace Spikers in a thrilling finish.

The inaugural ceremony began at 8.45 AM with Mr. Ronald Nazareth making his early morning announcement inviting all the teams (12 teams in Volley ball and 7 teams in Throw ball), to form a line in front of the dais. The president of Karaval Milan Mr. Eric escorted the guests Mr. Joseph Mathias from Merit Frieght Systems, Alfred D’Souza from Cab real estate. Mr. Nanu Marol welcomed all the guests, teams and the spectators for the sports meet and also highlighted the hard work put up by the senior committee members of Karaval Milan. Ms. Janet Sequeira briefed about the good works those carried out by the association for the past nine years. Mr. Ronald Nazareth lead the singing group for the beautiful prayer song.

Mr. Wilson D’Sa read the players oath and wished all the players, spectators and supporters success in the tournament. Mr. Alfred D’Souza along with committee members lit the torch, and declared the meet open by releasing the pigeons and balloons.

The following teams participated in the league matches held in the morning session:

Throw ball teams:
Mangalore Konkans, KCO Abu Dhabi, Kenarites Dubai, Jashan Dubai, Bunts Dubai ,United Stars & Konkans Dubai

Volley Ball Teams:
Ace Spikers, St. Lawrence, Karavali Milan-A, Karavali Milan-B, Namana Dubai, Coorg Friends, Henkel Polybite, Youngsters Nakre, Karwar Friends, Star One, United Mangaloreans and Saifa Friends.

All league matches were completed before lunch time and after noon was spared for the much awaited finals between the best teams.
A sumptuous buffet lunch prepared by Canara Restaurant was served to all those attended the tournament. Morning breakfast served by famous Shinanna of Udupi Restaurant , Karama.

The main attraction of today’s tournament was the mixed throw ball match. The players from all throw ball teams were selected by lots and divided into two teams equally. Each team was having 5 ladies and 4 men. This was to encourage male supporting members of throw ball teams. Solar team led by Nalini were winners and Cab real estate team were runners up. Reshma D’Cruz and Anand Menezes of Konkans Dubai team got best ladies and men player awards. Spectators thoroughly enjoyed every bit of today’s all matches.

The prominent personalities and sponsors including Joseph Mathais, Alfred D’Souza, Lancy madtha, Oliver D’Mello, Lancy D’Souza ,Fr.Alban D’Souza the priest of Pakshikere parish and other were present for the concluding ceremony were felicitated on this occasion. Lancy Madtha spoke few words on behalf of all sponsors and congratulated the organizing committee for beautifully organizing the whole event.

The vote of thanks was evoked by Pius James D’Souza wherein he thanked all sponsors, well wishers, media representatives, participating teams and esp. refreees: Sudhakar Alva, Melwin D’Souza, Satish Shetty , Moideen and team. He also thanked members of organizing committee and finally to all spectators without their support the tournament would not have been possible. He also rendered special thanks to Gilbert Aranha for ably conducting and Emceeing the whole day tournament and he received a big round of applause.

Raffle ticket draw was held and prizes were distributed to the winners. Earlier unsold tickets were auctioned and Jane Aranha bought all the tickets in the auction.

At the concluding ceremony the trophies were distributed to winning teams and also individual trophies were given to all finalists by the sponsors and prominent personalities.
