Bangalore, 15 April 2011: Dominating the locality after which it is named, Ulsoor lake was built by Kempe Gowda II. Five centuries and several rejuvenation attempts later, the lake makes a pretty picture, but scientists argue that it has been all but robbed of its ecological role, and water birds are conspicuous by their absence.

Ulsoor Gurudwara: Built by the banks of Ulsoor Lake in 1943, this iconic Sikh shrine — the largest in Bangalore — offers langar sewa (free Sunday meal) to hundreds every week. A rundown little shack adjacent to the gurudwara has its own set of fans. Bobby Da Dhaba offers a true taste of Punjab with its variety of parathas and rich sabzis.

Madras Sappers: One of the oldest regiments of the Indian Army, the Madras Sappers was raised in 1780 by the East India Company and deployed by the British Empire during their expansionist campaigns and also during World Wars I and II. Post-Independence, the Thambis, as they are also known, have notably provided support to troops in Siachen, helping in clearing mines, among other tasks. And swimming, rowing, boxing are among their fortes.
