Udupi/M’Belle: Seventieth Independence Day Celebrated with Patriotic Fervour

Moodubelle, 15 Aug 2016: India celebrated 70th Independence Day on Monday, 15 August 2016. The country became independent from British colonialism on this day in 1947. The day is celebrated with great patriotic fervour across every state of the country, with the capital city Delhi becoming the hub of all celebrations.
As the independence day is being celebrated throughout the country, people pay homage to leaders and freedom fighters who fought for the India’s freedom from British colonialism. The struggle for India’s Independence began in 1857 with the Sepoy Revolt in Meerut and later it was the Indian National Congress and other political organizations, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, launched an independence movement. After many years of freedom struggle the British finally granted independence to India on 15 August 1947.
Independence Day was celebrated in Moodubelle especially in St. Lawrence Church and St. Lawrence Educational Institutions as well as Lions Club, Moodubelle.
St. Lawrence Church:
Soon after the feast mass of the Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven, the ICYM Unit of Moodubelle organized the flag hoisting ceremony in the presence of a large number of parishioners who had attended the mass. Ronald Sabi D’Souza, an eminent parishioner of Moodubelle and an entrepreneur in Dubai who has been well-known for his philanthropic generosity was the chief guest on this occasion.
After hoisting the national tricolour, Ronald Sabi D’Souza conveyed the greetings of independence Day to the assembled parishioners and expressed hope that the independence that was won by our forefathers through their blood and sacrifice would be maintained and strengthened by the young generation for the future generations.
Soon after the flag hoisting ceremony, the ICYM also organised the ‘Vanamahotsava’ by planting two saplings by the chief guest Ronald Sabi D’Souza and Fr. Lawrence Cuthinha respectively.
Besides the chief guest Ronald Sabi D’Souza and Fr. Lawrence Cuthinha, the Independence Day celebration was attended by Alphonse Alva-Vice President of Parish Pastoral Council, Mrs. Latha D’Mello-Secretary, Vincent Fernandes-Animator of ICYM.
Belle Church Aided Higher Primary School:
Mr. Valerian Alva, an old student of Belle Church Aided Higher Primary School, an entrepreneur in London and President of Moodubelle Charitable Trust hoisted the nation al flag in front of the newly renovated school. Fr. Lawrence Cutinha, Assistant Parish Priest of St. Lawrence Church, Moodubelle, Rajendra Shetty, President of Old Students Association, Gerald Fernandes were present as guests. Sr. Irene Viegas, Headmistress of Belle Chruch Aided Higher Primary School welcomed the guests.
Students presented various exercises on this occasion.
St. Lawrence English Medium High School:
The flag hoisting ceremony in St. Lawrence English Medium High School was conducted by Fr. Lawrence Cutinha. President and members of the Parents-Teachers Association and Headmistress Mrs. Veera Fernandes were present on this occasion.
St. Lawrence PU College:
The Independence Day celebration was conducted jointly by St. Lawrence PU College and St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School. Mr. Valerian Alva as the chief guest hoisted the national flag. Fr. Lawrence Cutinha, Assistant Parish Priest of Moodubelle, Naveen Correa, Principal of St. Lawrence PU College and Mrs. Leena D’Silva, Headmistress of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School were present.
Lions Club, Moodubelle:
Ln. Elias D’Souza, President of Lions Club, Moodubelle hoisted the tricolour on the terrace of the Lions Seva Bhavan. Ln. Devdas Hebbar, mjf, Secretary of the Lions Club, Moodubelle and members Ln. Gerald Fernandes, Ln. Valerian Noronha, Ln. Joseph Martis and Ln. Eugene D’Souza were present.
