Mangalorean high-jumper Sahana Kumari reaches finals in CWG
Mangalore/Glasgow, 31 Jul 2014: Sahana Kumari, a National record holder has qualified for the final of the women’s high jump after finishing seventh in the qualifying round with an effort of 1.81m in the 20th Commonwealth Games at Glasgow.
Sahana, who hails from Kotekar near Mangalore, holds the national record with a jump of 1.92m.
The 32-year-old Mangalore-based athlete was the last Indian athlete to qualify for the London Games. She earned the B standard Olympic berth at the 52nd National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships held in G. M. C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium, Hyderabad, from 23 to 26 June 2012. She broke an eight-year old national record of 1.91 m set by Keralite Bobby Aloysius.
She has also won medals in several state and national level events, but could not live upto expectations in the London Olympics.
Sahana had her initial schooling at Anandashrama School, Someshwar, and graduated at Sri Gokarnanatheshwara College in Mangalore.
