Mangaluru, 26 Sep 2021: To cut down dependability on medical devices; indigenous innovation must be encouraged, said Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, vice-chancellor of NITTE (Deemed to be University) here on Friday, September 24.
Speaking after inaugurating of the program, Dr Bhandary said, ‘More than 80 percent of medical devices are imported from foreign countries. This is making the treatment more expensive. To cut down the cost of treatment producing and supplying the products locally is the best solution.’ he opined.
‘Ideation camp is necessary to make this happen. Universities with healthcare specialization must give encouragement to skill development activities among students and teaching faculty. So it will boost up new inventions, he added.
‘All the ideas need not be implemented. Ideas worth to be implemented have to be tested for feasibility. As we are dealing with healthcare facilities, we need to take care of human factors. Technologies with no human factor will not give much benefits,’ he said.
Ideation camp should go multidisciplinary. Multidisciplinary is essential to handle different branches of treatment and management. So the camp should give importance to it, Dr Bhandary advised.
Prof G Srinikethan, president of Institution Innovation Council (IIC) presided over the function. Prof Idya Karunasagar, advisor, research and iatents, NITTE (Deemed to be University) gave insights about the camp.
Shashi Kumar Shetty, member, Institution Innovation Council (IIC), KSHEMA delivered the preliminary address. Arjun Punja, assistant resident engineer, Nitte (Deemed to be University) proposed vote of thanks.
The timeline of drive will be as follows. Submission of the ideas open from September 24, Submission of deadline will be October 30. Screening and announcement of shortlisted ideas will be November 10.
