Bantwal, 03 Feb 2021: An elderly woman’s death that was earlier considered as natural death turned out to be a murder at Ammunje village which comes under the limits of Bantwal rural police station.
Seventy-two-year-old Benedicta Carlo, a native of Ammunje passed away on January 26.
The police arrested twenty-five-year-old Elma Praschita Baretto, a native of Amtady village, near here who was taking care of Benedicta. The police also arrested Elma’s accomplices Satish and Charan, who are the native of Narikombu, near here. The cops also recovered 98 grams of gold jewellery.
The cops were led by Bantwal rural sub-inspector Prasanna, Vittal sub-inspector Vinod Reddy, head constables Girish, Suresh, Janardhan, Pramila and Kiran, constables Nazir, Punit, Manoj and Prasanna. The operation was held at the instructions of Bantwal sub division deputy police commissioner Valentine D’Souza and Bantwal circle inspector T D Nagaraj.
Background of the case
Benedicta Carlo (72) passed away on January 26 presumed suspicious death. Meanwhile, her son on February 2 lodged a complaint with Bantwal rural police station suspecting foul play in this regard.
The police suspected the role of caretaker Elma who revealed the names of 2 accomplices in smothering Benedicta with a pillow on January 25. Her accomplices Satish and Charan were arrested. Upon interrogation, duos confessed to the heinous crime with the greed to steal 98 grams of gold jewellery.
Further investigations are underway.
