Bantwal, 02 May 2016: As the temperatures are souring day-by-day, the rural villages in the taluk are reeling under acute shortage of water. The people drawing water from their household open wells are much comfortable, while the people solely depending on tap water supplied through borewells by gram panchayats are severely affected to get drinking water.
The acute water shortage has been witnessed in villages of Sarapady, Balepuni, Panjikallu, Baltila, Naringana, Kolnad and Vittal Padnoor across the taluk. The borewells have gone dry in these villages, while the drinking water is being supplied in tankers at Naringana, Balepuni and Kolnad villages since one week.
At the backdrop of drinking water woes in rural villages, Bantwal taluk panchayat administration convened 2 meetings of panchayat development officers (PDO) to take early actions in this regard.
‘It was decided to supply water once in 2 days in such areas that face the shortage of water. Besides, tanker water will be supplied in extreme cases,’ Bantwal taluk panchayat CEO Cyprian Miranda.
‘The work is in progress under Bahugram Drinking Water Project in the taluk and municipal limits @ Rs 52 crore to supply drinking water. The water woes would be reduced from coming year,’ Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister Ramanath Rai.
As an innovation to beat the soaring temperatures, Kalliga gram panchayat vice president Purusha Salian erected an umbrella to his two-wheeler to bear the scorching sun.
