Karkal, 17 Feb 2015: A bison was found in an open well that is located in the plantation of a certain Xavier Rebello, residing in Majalakodi, near Belman, here on Sunday February 15 late night. Rebello who has gone to start the pump at the nearby well, found the bison trapped in the well, struggling to get out. He informed the neighbours who in turn informed Karkal range forest department.
Bison was too weak to find its way although it tried overnight to get out of the well. The foresters who arrived at the location made an opening at the well using earthmover and the bison safely found its way up.
Bison was injured
Its leg was injured when it was trapped in a trap laid for boars. Once it walked to safety it began grazing on the field nearby. It was struggling to walk owing to pain on one of its hind leg. Meanwhile, the foresters and local youth managed to tie up the bison to a tree.
The veterinarian Dr Sunil Nayak arrived at the location and managed to remove the piece of wire that had pierced through its hind leg and applied ointment. It was later released at the wooded area nearby Bola here.
Karkal range forest officer Prakash, Belman foresters Nagesh Billava and Bhaskar, ZP member Kedinje Supreet Shetty, Bola gram panchayat vice president Satish Poojary, Avinash Malli and others assisted in the rescue operation.
The locals flocked in a large numbers to see the bison trapped in the open well. However, it finally made it to wild with the help of forest department.
