Udupi, 30 Aug 2014: Konkani Recognition Day was observed in St. Lawrence Composite PU College, Moodubelle on Thursday, 28 August 2014. Rev. Fr. Paul Sequeira presided over the programme. Dr. K. Mohan Pai, Head of the Konkani Education Department of Vishwa Konkani Centre, Mangalore was the chief guest and resource person.
The chief sponsor of the programme, Valerian Lobo, Mrs. Hilda Aranha-Senior Teacehr of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High school, Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Souza-memebr of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, Rajendra Shetty-President of Belle Grama Panchayat and Alphonse K. Alva-Vice President of Parish Pastoral Council were present on the dais.
On the occasion of the Konakni Recognition Day a number of competitions in Konkani were conducted for the students and winners were given prizes. Konkani songs were also presented on this occasion.
Dr. K. Mohan Pai in his speech traced the history of Konkani language and highlighted the importance of learning Konkani. Valerian Lobo also spoke on this occasion and stressed the fact that Konkani should be taught in schools as third language.
The entire programme was conducted in Konkani language. The Konkani teacher of the school, Robert Menezes compeered the programme. Mrs. Chandrakala B.E., Kannada lecturer in the PU College welcomed the gathering and Mrs. Hilda Aranha proposed the vote of thanks.
