Bangalore, July 10, 2014 : The Manganiars renowned as highly skilled folk musicians of the Thar Desert performed at Greenwood High International School. Their songs are passed on from generation to generation as a form of oral history of the desert. They sing songs about Alexander the Great, about the local Maharajas and past battles in the region. Manganiar have survived for centuries on the patronage of wealthy merchants in caravan towns, particularly Jaisalmer where there is an important settled community today.
Bhutte Khan led his group as a vocalist along with Multan Khan and Nehru Khan, while Chanan Khan played the kamaycha, a 17-stringed bow instrument, Anwar Khan played the harmonium, Bhutta Khan played the dholak and Mustaque Khan played a sitara, a wind instrument similar to a flute.
The children were enthralled with the variety of rustic Indian music (Rajasthani Folk) right out of the heart of Rajasthan. The group sang some well known folk songs and also sang to some of the request from the students.
Greenwood High takes pride in organizing these kind of events for students so that they get a feel of what is available in different parts of India and how rich our culture is.
