Mangalore: A massive fire mishap broke out at Pachchanady dumping yard on Saturday night and fire fighters were not able to esxtingush the fire till Sunday evening.
Speaking to Environment Engineer Madhu informed that the fire broke out at 10.30 pm on Saturday night and the MCC personnel controlled fire immediately utilising three emergency tanks of 5000 litre capacity. Additional water tanks were sent immediately.
The fire was brought under control at 4.30 am on Sunday but within few hours the garbage caught fire again and it spread to various parts due the wind by 2.30 pm. The extingushing operation went on till Sunday evening. Three fire brigades have been stationed at the dump yard to arrest fire.
Madhu ruling out any external foul play in the incident said that the methane gas emitted from the garbage catches fire automatically in room temperature hence possibility of foul play can be ruled out. MCC Commissioner K N Vijay Prakash said that the problem, which is recurring every year needs to be mitigated scientifically.
“There has to be a exhaust pipe for the methane to circulate into the sump. Since there is some lacunae there, this problem is occuring. MCC will take steps to see to it that these mishaps donot occur in future,” he said. It may be recalled that there was a similar fire mishp in the dmpyard during January last year, which could not be controlled for couple of days.
