Mangalore, 10 Mar 2014: The officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) have again thwarted attempt of smuggling of gold and seized 4 gold pieces, totally weighing 1000.130 grams and valued at Rs 30,60,398 concealed in an air compressor form the possession of a passenger named Muhammed Kunhi Cheeri Kundu aged about 49 years, who is a resident of Cheeri Kundu House, Cheruvathur, Kaidakkad Post, Kasargod district of Kerala and arrived at MIA on Monday March 10 at about 05.30am by Jet Airways flight 9W531 from Dubai. The said passenger was arrested later and produced before the Magistrate. Further investigations are under way.
The operations were conducted under the supervision of MIA assistant commissioner of customs Krishna Kumar Prasad, led by superintendent B Prabhakar Poojary, superintendents Lionel Fernandes, Sendhil Murugan, B A Kariappa, H G Yogesh and inspectors G Kumaraswamy and Virender Kumar, Hawaldar K S Ravindra.
Further, MIA commissioner of customs D Purushotham expressed his deep concern regarding the increasing trends in smuggling and directed the officers to intensify the vigilance and surveillance and crack the attempts made by the unscrupulous elements who are indulging in these activities.
