Mangalore, 16 Jun 2013 (TOI): Keeping pace with the changing times, Canara High School - CBSE authorities are connecting with parents through a social networking site.
Parents can now log on to Facebook to keep track of the academic and extracurricular activities of their children. The school authorities recently opened an account, Canara Cbse, on Facebook to update the activities of students in the school. Nearly 822 students pursue education here.
Joy J Rai, principal of the school, told TOI that photos of all events, like sports, painting and other competitions will be uploaded on the FB page. This apart, timetable of examinations and class tests will be posted on FB. "Every month we will upload details about how much academic syllabus of all the subjects are taught to students," she added. The schools’ FB account already has 389 friends in its friends list.
This account was opened in March as many parents are professionals and cannot visit schools to take part in various events, she said.
"Many would like to see their children taking part in competitions and how their children are learning in classrooms. Videos of all these activities will be uploaded on FB," she added.
From this academic year, Canara High School also introduced ’bag less schooling,’ a new concept for first standard students. Under this, students books and stationery are kept in school itself. As many as 111 students are enrolled in first standard here.
Joy claims that "Our school is the first in Dakshina Kannada district to take an initiative of updating all the activities of the school on FB."
Usha Kamath, mother of Class I student Arnav Prashanth Kamath, who recently shifted from Mumbai to Mangalore, said the initiative is helpful for many parents who do not find much time to monitor children’s activities that take place in school. "Now we can check all the activities of the school during free time by logging into FB," she added.
Reshma Mallya, who is a branch manager in a private bank, said the FB page of the school will be helpful for parents because today most of the people have FB account. "School authorities have caught up the trend of conveying messages via FB," she said.
Echoing the same, Sulakshana Prabhu, another parent, said it’s a good move by the school authorities as most people are connected to FB.
