Hebri: Hebri:8th Kannada Sahitya Sammelan underway

Karkal, 7 Jun 2013: In spite of Kannada being reckoned as one among 30 key languages in the world with 2,000 years history and has grown significant literarily; it’s tragic that Kannada is facing the threat for its sustenance.  Meanwhile, the threat could be restricted by organizing Kannada Sahitya Sammelans, said state Kannada Sahitya Parishat chairman Pundalika Halambi.

 

Halambi was speaking after inaugurating Udupi district eighth Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at Anantapadmanabha temple, Hebri, near here on Thursday June 6.

‘The influence of English is so much that it’s rare to find people who converse in Kannada in Karnataka.  The people are facing the illusion that Kannada will not help one to sustain living.   The people are more concerned of future of their children rather than of Kannada.  It’s owing to this situation, several Kannada medium schools are on the verge of shutting down because of poor strength of students,’ said Halambi. He appealed to litterateurs, Kannada-speaking people had to join hands with state government in sustaining the mother tongue, appealed Halambi.

The Sammelan chairman Ambatanaya Mudrady presided the programme.

Udupi district Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Nilavar Surendra Adiga, Coastal Development Authority former president Tingale Vikramarjuna Hegde, veteran cine artiste Ramesh Rao, Karkal former MLA Gopal Bhandary, state Kannada Sahitya Parishat former president Harikrishna Punaroor, past Sammelan chairman Kundapur A L N Hebbar also spoke at the occasion.

The information and broadcasting district officer M Junjanna, senior litterateur Palakala Sitaram Bhat, Karkal block education officer Ravishankar, Kasargod district Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Subramanya Bhat, Dakshina Kannada district Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and others were present at the dais.

The Sammelan reception Committee president Yogish Bhat welcomed the gathering.  The chief secretary Rangappayya Holla proposed vote of thanks.  The cultural Committee convener Aroor Timmappa Shetty compered the programme.

Highlights:

•         The Sammelan chairman was taken in a grand procession from Bunts Bhavan to the venue at Hebri.
•         Tingale Vikramarjun Hegde inaugurated the bookstalls; the artist Ramesh Rao inaugurated the arts exhibition.
•         Several books were released at the occasion.
•         The artistically created stage was decorated with Tulunadu traditional objects, coconut fronds, areca leaves. 
 
Halambi urges state administration to implement Mahishi Report:

Its tragic that the report submitted to state administration by the renowned litterateur Dr Sarojini Mahishi twenty years ago, in order to help Kannada medium students to secure government jobs, which is shoved to back burner.  He urged the state authorities to review the report and grant 50 percent reservation to Kannada medium students in competitive exams, state Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pundalika Halambi.
