Monsoon sets in after 2 days delay; heavy rains expected

DHNS

Mangalore, 08 June 2010: South-West Monsoon has set in over Coastal Karnataka and some more parts of South interior Karnataka on Monday.

According to information available from meteorological department, conditions are favourable for further advancement of South West Monsoon over some more parts of Karnataka in the next 48 hours.

Though monsoon has entered the coastal district, the region received scattered rainfall on Monday.

The normal date for the onset of Monsoon over Coastal Karnataka is June 5. However, there are instances of delay in Monsoon eight times since 1983. The delay in monsoon was due to rare occurance, whereby Monsoon had advanced to South interior parts directly without entering the coastal Karnataka first. The last time this happened was in 2000 and before that, it was in 1982. It is said that under normal condition, the Monsoon would reach the interior areas and coastal areas simultaneously. Due to low pressure area in Arabian sea, there was disturbance in wind flow, thus affecting the advancement of Monsoon.

In the last 24 hours, Puttur received 4 cm, Kundapur—4 cm, Mulki—4 cm, Kota—2 cm, Mudibidre, Dharmasthala, Panambur, Mangalore airport, Karkala received one cm rainfall each. Heavy rains would occur at isolated places over Coastal Karnataka and South interior Karnataka during next 48 hours.
