Udupi, 26 Mar 2013: The absence of a traffic signal at Shiribeedu junction adjacent to the city bus stand has created chaos and continues to annoy vehicles users. Ever since the Karavali junction-Manipal stretch was developed into a four-lane, the absence of a traffic signal at the junction is puzzling since similar arrangement in other junctions in the town has resulted in good traffic management.
Bharath, a two-wheeler user who works in a private enterprise in Udupi, told that Shiribeedu is a busy and congested junction as vehicles from Kidiyoor Hotel Road, Bannanje and Manipal converge there. The authority concerned has not taken up installation of a traffic signal which was supposed to be carried out along with the road construction works.
Vadiraj, another commuter, said road blocks are common during peak hours. Police also are finding it difficult to control the traffic at the junction as most of the city and service buses enter the bus stand through this junction, he added. Traffic police should be deployed throughout the day time at the junction and action should be taken to install a traffic signal at the earliest.
Superintendent of Police MB Boralingaiah told TOI that though traffic congestion is evident during peak hours in Shiribeedu junction, installing a traffic signal might further add to congestion as the city bus stand is located near to the junction. He added that the police department had not reviewed the situation at the junction recently and hence he would have to assess the situation and take corrective measures.
