Udupi: Arrested Somalians may be relieved soon

Udupi, 03 June 2010: Finally, the two Somalians who were under Udupi Coastal Security Police custody can now heave a sigh of relief as the time has come for them to fly to their respective motherland.

Abdi Fataah (19) and Mehmood (33) from Somalia were nabbed by Udupi Coastal Security Police when they were sighted 20 nautical miles away from Gangolli in Kundapur taluk on August 10, 2009. As they were unable to produce required legal documents for crossing the Indian waters, a case was registered and both were produced before Udupi court. The final court verdict on the case was pronounced on February 20, 2010.

Following the court order, the Coastal Security Police approached the government through FRO of the district, Udupi SP Prawin Pawar.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Udupi Coastal Security Police Inspector Kiran informed that the State government has sent a message of sanctioning the air tickets and after confirming the same, we will deport them to their native country,” he added.

SP Prawin Pawar informed “the matter was referred to me barely a month ago and I took up the matter with State Foreign Registration Officer immediately. Flight charges have been confirmed by the government now and the duo will be sent to their homeland at the earliest. The process may take another one week,” he added.

Even though the court directed Coastal Security Police to extradite them immediately, the process took longer time than expected with the commencement of the Gram Panchayat polls.

“Their entire expense is borne by the government and our department had the responsibility to handle and restrict them within the confinement of available legal facilities,” added Kiran.
