Chikmagalur, 03 January 2013: A school headmaster who allegedly misbehaved with a 13-year-old girl was thrashed by a mob in Karnataka’s Chikmagalur on Wednesday.
According to police, Manappa who is the headmaster of a higher primary school had been allegedly harassing the Class VII girl for a long time. On Wednesday, teachers asked the victim and her friend to sweep the classroom. Around 9am when the girls started mopping, the headmaster allegedly misbehaved with the girl.
Shocked by the headmaster’s behaviour, the girl ran out of the school and told her mother about the incident. The concerned mother along with a group of people went to the school and confronted the headmaster who rejected their claim outright.
More people joined the group and the mob pulled the headmaster out of the school before thrashing him. Superintendent of police Shashikumar other senior police officers rushed to the school and tried to rescue the headmaster. When the people didn’t retreat, police officers resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd.
The police arrested Manappa and will remand him in judicial custody. They have recorded the girl’s statement. Block education officer Nagesh said the education department will initiate an inquiry and take appropriate action.
