Manipal,13 May 2012: The turf wicket in Manipal University is the only one anywhere along coastal Karnataka. All others are matting wickets. That is a facility created for the students and staff of the university. And, it has been extended to the budding cricketers of Udupi zone. About 60 of them are being put through their paces in a camp under two coaches deputed by Karnataka State Cricket Association. The camp is being held under the banner of KSCA.
The summer camp began on April 19, 2012 and will continue up to May 25, 2012. The ground at End Point where the camp is being held was compared with the best in the country when former cricketer Brajesh Patel inaugurated it two seasons ago. The youngsters are loving it too.
They are out in the mornings and evening enjoying the lush green outfield and a beauty of a turf wicket. It is important for these youngsters as they do not know how a turf wicket feels. That is the reason why Manipal University extended the facility and allowed the camp to be held here.
At a function on Thursday to meet the youngsters and distribute caps, Pro Chancellor of the University, Dr H.S.Ballal said that the facility was being opened to encourage budding talent in muffosil areas and develop the game in the area. He exhorted the students to stay fit at all times.
Dr Anand Venugopal of Manipal University and Dr Srikanth Rai, President Dakshina Kannada Cricket association and convenor of KSCA, Mangalore Zone were present at the function.
