Mangalore, 13 November 2011: A college girl, who was on her way to join a group that was to leave for a village for a National Service Scheme (NSS) camp, died in an accident along with her father on Saturday morning.
Hit by a lorry
Sushmita (20), a student of St. Agnes College, was riding pillion on the scooter with her father when their vehicle was hit by a lorry near Gorigudda bus-stop here.
According to Mangalore rural police, Ramesh Alape, who is known for his theatre activities, was taking Sushmita to her college from where she had to proceed for a National Service Scheme camp. They left their house in Bajal around 8 a.m.
Driver did not stop
A few metres before the Gorigudda bus-stop, Abu Sali, driver of the lorry, reportedly hit the scooter from behind. Abu Sali did not stop and drove away, it is said.
The police said Sushmita died on the spot and her father sustained serious injuries. A doctor, who was driving along the accident spot, moved them to Omega Hospital, where Mr. Alape died.
The police later seized the lorry and arrested Abu Sali.
Friends shocked
The news of Sushmita’s death shocked her classmates who were waiting to leave for the NSS camp. St. Agnes College Students’ Union president Soudamini said 75 students, including Sushmita, a B.A. second year student, were to attend a four-day camp from Saturday.
“We were all waiting for her and started calling her when there was a delay. This is when we got to know of the accident,” she said.
Ms. Soudamini said Sushmita was a good student.
