Manipal, 31 May 2011: On the occasion of World no Tobacco day on 30th May, sculptures from tea cups created by Manipal sand artist Shrinath Manipal, Venki Palimar and Ravi Hirebettu was exhibited in front of Shirdi Saibaba Cancer Hospital, in Manipal. The awareness sculpture was unveiled by Dr. Pulgavkar from Kasturba Hospital. Dr. Vidyasagar from Radiotherapy and Oncology of the Hospital were also present during the unveiling ceremony.
On this occasion, informative leaflets containing the ill effects of tobacco were distributed. According to these leaflets, in India every year 8 to 9 lakhs of people die due to intake of tobacco products. For every 8 second one person dies with diseases related to tobacco intake. Tobacco in takers will have three times more chances to have heart diseases than others. With the tobacco intake mouth cancer, throat cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, abdominal cancer, kidney cancer and urinary bladder cancer can take place.
What is the contents of tobacco? Ammonia: is used for plastic, explosives and fertilizer. Carbon monoxide: weaken the body resistance power against deceases. Cyanide: is a poisonous gas and can be deadly. Nicotine: gradually weakens the supply of blood and oxygen. Tar: is made out of many chemicals and damages the minute respiratory veins.
