Mangaluru: II phase of road works on Shirady Ghat to begin after DC’s survey – Minister Rai

Mangaluru, 21 Dec 2017: A decision will be taken after DK district DC and PWD officials visit the location of proposed II phase of road works along Shirady Ghat, whether to ban all vehicular traffic or allow only light vehicular, when the road works begins, said state forests and DK district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai.
The minister Rai was speaking during progress review meeting of various development works, at DC’s chamber, here, on Wednesday, December 20.
He also said, ‘The works are already delayed, while it has to be undertaken to maintain quality and considering the interest of general public.’ He advised to begin the works at the earliest, citing the alternative routes has many weaker culverts that may not bear heavy vehicular traffic, cautioned minister Rai.
The state food minister U T Khader urged to widen the vital road of Charmady Ghat that would take more traffic towards Chikmagaluru/Hassan before beginning the road works at Shiradi Ghat.
Puttur MLA Shakuntala Shetty suggested the alternative routes along Gundya-Kaikamba-Kadaba-Uppinangady and diversions during ongoing works at minor culverts on Shiradi Ghat.
DK district DC Dr Sasikant Sentil said 2 sand blocks will be allotted in CRZ limits for PWD to complete the road works on Shirady Ghat.
PWD executive engineer for national highways Ramesh said that 13 kilometers road works will be undertaken on second phase at Shirady Ghat with an estimate cost fo Rs 61.57 crore. It needs 5 months to complete the work, while tenders are floated already in this regard. The hi-tech machineries are brought from overseas to maintain quality of road works. The stalling of all vehicular traffic is essential to maintain quality.
