Bengaluru/Mangaluru/Udupi: The Karnataka High Court on Friday issued a stay order on organizing Kambala in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district still November 26.

The order was issued by the High Court during the hearing of a PIL filed by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). It sought directions that the government prohibited the sport.

It was pointed out that as many as 65 cases of violence against animals were registered during the Kambala in 2014 and 2015. The Advocate representing PETA said that the Apex Court had not granted permission to hold a similar sport in Tamil Nadu and Kerala due to the violence inflicted.

Meanwhile, Advocate speaking in favour of the Kambala said that the sport was being held in the twin districts from the past three centuries. He added that the sport would be held in the presence of the police and Tahsildars and the events were also video recorded.
