Shirva GP sensitize people to use cotton bags for shopping

Udupi, 21 Oct 2016: Shirva gram panchayat in collaboration with MSW department of St Mary’s College, Shirva and Rotary Club – Shirva organized sensitization programme on compulsorily implementing total ban on plastics as per the directives of SC and orders of both union and state government, on Thursday, October 20 that being the Shandy day in Shirva locality.
ZP member Wilson Rodrigues after inaugurating the programme said that public support is essential in banning plastic in daily use.
Shirva gram panchayat president Ranjani Poojary released the stickers of plastic ban on the occasion.
Rotary district assistant governor Dr Gururaj released the handbills.
Rotary Club – Shirva president Dr Arun Hegde in his presidential address said that Rotary has offered 7-day training to women in making cotton and paper bags. He urged the people to compulsorily use cotton bags whilst buying necessities.
Rotary distributed cotton bags to people who were returning from shandy with stuffs in plastic bags.
MSW students, Rotary members and social activists visited each shop and urged them to cooperate in plastic free mission.
Shirva gram panchayat vice president Devdas Nayak, former president Hasanabba Shaikh, ZP former vice president Leena Mathias, Rotary past president Melvyn D;Souza, St Mary’s College lecturer Laxmi Acharya, Shirva gram panchayat members were present.
Shirva rural development officer Mamata Y Shetty welcomed the gathering and delivered preliminary address. Shirva gram panchayat member K R Patkar compered the programme. Rotary secretary Sunil Cabral proposed vote of thanks.
