Bantwal, 07 Sep 2016: A huge peepul tree uprooted on inter-state highway between Kalladka – Kanhangad at Maira, on Tuesday September 6.

As a result, the traffic was disrupted for sometime till the forest officials arrived with the workmen to chop-off the branches of the tree and clear the trunk away from the road.

The aged tree was withered and the local village council of Kepu had written letter to forest department to axe the tree as it was a safety hazard. The forest department did not take any action in this regard.

The people used to wait for buses underneath the tree, but fortunately there were none on the ill fated day.

Kepu gram panchayat member Niranjan, Ukkuda range forest officer Lokesh, forest guard Manjunat, forest watcher Shekar and Padmanabha arrived at the spot and cleared the tree.
