Govt celebrates Tipu Jayanthi amid clashes throughout state
Madikeri, 10 Nov 2015: The VHP secretary in the state was killed after group clashes erupted at Thimmiah Circle following a bandh that was called as the BJP and several other groups opposed the celebrations of Tipu Jayanthi on November 10.
The deceased Kuttappa (50), the VHP secretary sustained serious injuries in the stone pelting incident and violent clashes that erupted as people opposed the state government’s decision to celebrate Tipu’s birth anniversary. Kuttappa, though was rushed to the hospital succumbed to his injuries.
Soon after the VHP leader’s death, unidentified persons shot a youth, reportedly identified as Sahil (25). He was seriously injured and brought to Mangaluru for treatment, sources said.
The police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
Following these clashes, the police have imposed prohibitory orders in the city.
In the meantime, security has been tightened at Tipu’s memorial in Srirangapatna. Unconfirmed sources state that there were few incidents of stones being pelted at government buses in Madikeri on Tuesday.
Amid tension in the state, Girish Karnad said, “Bengaluru International Airport should be renamed after Tipu sultan. Tipu was a great warrior and no Kannadiga born in 300 years could match Tipu’s greatness.

The protestors reportedly gheraoed Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Animal Husbandry TB Jayachandra’s car.

Posters on Tipu Jayanthi were destroyed and were smeared with black ink while the Bajarang Dal in disrupted Tipu Jayanthi celebrations.
